About Me

Authentic, accessible & passionate about what I do. After near 20 years immersed in law [emphasis on reaching the underserved/at risk] my focus now is to apply that knowledge in new ways through music & the arts. To educate, inspire & inform, & provide hands-on help in ways that are meaningful & of value to each individual. Just as with my art works & projects that often focus around the stories or emotions certain characters portray, music is full of stories, characters & colors!. We all have gifts & talents that are to be acknowledged, developed, invested & respected.

Joanne N.- is proficient in and teaches Keyboard and Piano Lessons .

What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons

Beginner -

Authentic, accessible & passionate about what I do. At present time my schedule allows for beginning students-with addt'l possible in 2018. With applied patience & discipline, I believe learning should be an adventure & increase both cognitive & non-cognitive skills. My framework includes established behavioral expectations & guidelines, whilst understanding each student has different expectations, desires & degrees of motivation & discipline (re: age). Parental involvement is invaluable for young learners, for music is an outlet for creativity, it is a confidence builder, & it helps set the tone for long term success. Beyond learning mechanics in traditional form (i.e. note reading / scales /memorization /aural / building practice habits / proper posture / to recitals & more), on an age appropriate level I encourage artistic exploratory learning-the freedom of choice & to make music!. Resources such as creative & fun exercises & home practice activities are provided. Specific methods & courses of study are discussed & agreed upon with each pupil and/or parent & can include but not limited to: Lelia Fletcher, Alfred's, Hal Leonard, John W. Schaum, John Thompson, All in One, Teaching Little Fingers to Play, 'Big Books'/ Trad. sheet music, books, digital files /other.

Formal Education:

Unrelated academics include Paralegal cert., MSc. Criminal Justice, Doctoral research in Law/other related. Formative years in music began with piano lessons from my mother who was a graduate of the Royal Conservatory. Following on, my studies continued to grade 5 through private/public instruction, recitals, examinations, competition, & various performance venues. Received structured training in voice (10yrs choral / soloist / duet); private Violin, Accordion, Organ; 3yrs French Horn/Band). All concentrated on both practical & technical & incl. assessment based ( i.e) from beginning scales/all major-minor keys, aural & sight reading to phrasing, improv. & musical complexity.

Private Education:

In relation to music as an add to the above, my life course emphasis is on piano-with further development (to grade 8) self-taught: incl. areas of historical, biographical, and stylistic elements.

Performing Experience:

Formative years and beyond comprised traditional forms of measurement such as solo/group recitals & priv/public performances. From youth onwards, active participation in faith based initiatives/programs in areas of musical theater; piano/voice solo & accompaniment as well as volunteerism ( pianist/companion to seniors). Pianist for Sunday worship services.

Experience Teaching:

Is not limited to music, with prior experience as elementary tutor, professional builder/skilled tradesman/business owner & as an accomplished artist & sculptor-providing informal training in multi-disciplinary art. Have served as choir director & piano teacher for church assembly & as private piano instructor intermittently over the years. Believe in the necessity of sharing not just the 'where, what & when', but also 'Why'.
