About Me

Hi, my name is Billy and I am a guitarist, drummer, singer, & songwriter originally from the Texas Panhandle. I have been a student of music for 20 years. My musical influences include the blues, gospel, country and I also enjoy punk rock, rap and hip-hop. My teaching style can best be described as flexible, fun and patient. My teaching philosophy can best be described by saying that I discover the students needs and wants then I cater the curriculum to them personally. In my lessons, you can expect to learn the foundations of musicianship that can be applied across all genres of music. I like to tell my students to have patience with themselves as this is the key to creating progress. My favorite thing about teaching is the look on a students face when they learn something new and exciting. My favorite performance was Joe Bonamassa in Amarillo, TX when I was 21 years old. My students love that I infuse jamming with the rudiments and foundational techniques in order to keep it fun and exciting. I primarily teach guitar and drums, but I can also teach songwriting. My approach as a teacher is to spread my love and appreciation for music and its history. Thanks for taking a look at my profile. I hope to meet you soon!

What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate

Music theory will be the primary approach to teaching songwriting. The most common chord changes and song structures will be explained on paper and reviewed repeatedly throughout the learning process. The use of visual instruction on paper as well as applying these techniques to the instrument will give the student an ability to hear patterns and play music by ear. The lyrical side of songwriting will also be explained. This includes how lyrics and poetry tie into the rhythm and phrasing and much more.

What to expect in my Guitar Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate

The students can expect to learn music theory of the different genres, including how chord changes work, how licks and arpeggios play into the music, and how to build these themselves on the fly. Improvisation of lead guitar solos and licks are something I help my students develop as well.

What to expect in my Drum Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate

Rudiments, fills, snare rolls, and wrist dexterity are just a few of the foundational lessons I teach my students. We begin our lesson with an analysis of where the student currently stands. From there I take them into the common rock and blues beats that are used in 80% of all the music they've ever listened to. From there I begin to break down different variations of these beats. We continue on with working on limb independence and playing to a metronome.

Formal Education:

My only formal education in music was vocal training with the men's chorale throughout my teens.

Private Education:

The private education I received came from two guitar teachers when I was twelve. My education on guitar after that was entirely self taught along with my experimentation with the drums.

Performing Experience:

My performing experience dates back to middle school when I was apart of the boys choir. I also began performing as a guitarist in a rock band around this time. As I entered high school I joined a touring punk band that regularly played for 5 years in major cities in the south west: Houston, Albuquerque, Amarillo, Denver, and Springfield. Once I moved to college I was able to join multiple punk rock and blues cover bands as a drummer.

Experience Teaching:

At college I took up teaching guitar to young students in my spare time. I touched on mostly punk rock and blues influenced music such as rock n roll and heavy metal. Three years ago I moved to D.C. and began formally teaching drums through the School of Rock in Vienna, Virginia.
