What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons
Beginning songwriters learn to create original melodies and lyrics and to write them down according to their keys and time signatures on lead sheets. They learn to compose melodies with various rhythms and chord progressions. They also learn to improvise accompani-ments, playing them on piano or guitar. They are encouraged to sing along too! According to their level of musicianship, they may learn to write out their accompaniments. I also introduce them to songwriting software, as appropriate. They are given opportunities to perform their original compositions at recitals and in other venues.
What to expect in my Guitar Lessons
Students first learn to read guitar music on the staff, playing melodies and strumming chords. Using a graded curriculum, they progress to learning scales, strumming techniques, rhythm patterns, chord progressions, finger picking, and tablature. They experience playing folk songs, classical tunes, Beatles and rock, pop, Christmas music, country, and blues. We make it fun! They are encouraged to participate in recitals and to play for family and friends, in church, school, and neighborhood ensembles--garage band, anyone?
What to expect in my Vocal Lessons
Students will be taught healthy singing techniques and be given vocal exercises to practice at home. Students are expected to record the lessons and practice with them. They will receive copies of vocal music and practice recordings. Repertoire includes classic children's songs, movie and Disney songs, Broadway songs, and other styles as desired, including Christian/gospel, country, blues, R&B, jazz and classical. Students are encouraged to participate in recitals and other events such as local musical theatre productions.
What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons
Students will learn to read music through a graded piano curriculum including theory, technique, and a variety of piano pieces and songs from different composers and cultures. Students need to practice at least five times weekly and keep a record of their practice. Students learn proper techniques and how to play rhythmically and expressively. They learn to read, compose, and improvise music in all styles. They are encouraged to participate in recitals and to use their talents in opportunities at home, school, church, contests. and other venues.
