Mikel  has been involved in music since the age of 8.  When he received a guitar from his father for his birthday, he knew from that moment that he wanted to play guitar for the rest of his life.  Mikel has been an active performer since his youth, performing at local venues and church.  Going into high school, Mikel branched out into rock music and jazz.  Mikel was employed at a local music store selling guitars and teaching while in high school.  Once he enrolled in college, he received a formal education in classical and jazz music.  His musical styles also expanded into performing in live theater, classical, country, jazz, blues, and various types of world music.  Mikel also had formal and private training in piano lessons while enrolled in colllege.  As a recent graduate of California State University Stanislaus, Mikel received a Bachelor's of Music with an emphasis in Jazz Studies. *

I will be completing my final semester at California State University, Stanislaus. I will be receiving a Bachelor's of Music with an emphasis in Jazz Studies. While at CSU Stanislaus I received a versatile education in classical and jazz music theory, classical and jazz music history, classical and jazz composition. I played jazz guitar in the big band and combo, plus I played in the guitar ensemble during my time at Stanislaus. As a requirement for graduation, I studied piano for 4 semester to pass the piano proficiency.
Private Education:
Over the 20 year span of guitar playing, I have studied in the following areas through private lessons: Rock, Classical, Jazz, Country, Blues, Folk, Composition, and Improvisation. I also studied piano for 2 years through private lessons.
Performing Experience:
Performance has been a part of my life since the age of 8. I got my start with performance through school band and church. When I got into high school, I joined the jazz band, jazz combo, and jazz vocal group. This is where I started to develop my jazz guitar skills. Rock music was another love of mine, so I started a rock band with some fellow high school peers and we played at high school events and local events around town. Once out of high school, I expanded in performing different types of music. I ventured into playing live theater music, country, blues, ska, punk, classical, various world music that included jewish, hispanic, south american, and african music. As of recently I have started playing in the casino circuit and I plan on going on the road to perform once I finish with my Master's degree.
Experience Teaching:
I got my start teaching private lessons at the age of 16. For 12 years I have tried to be the best teacher I could be with helping my students reach their full potential. When I was a senior at CSU Stanislaus, I directed a small jazz group for the school year 2. We would meet on a weekly basis and perform for school functions and concerts.
