Born with the gift of rhythm, David began drumming on anything within an arms reach before he could walk. At the age of six, David began study with George Dunn of Huber and Breese Music. George was a personal mentor to David for over 12 years and provided instruction in every style of drumset performance from jazz to afrocuban. As for classical percussion, George provided instruction on rudimental snare drum techniques and marimba. During this time, David competed and took first place in both state wide and national competitions through American Guild of Music. After high school, David decided to pursue a Jazz Performance degree at Wayne State University and earned a $8000/year talent award from his audition. Since the start of his college career, he has been studying with some of the most on demand musicians in Detroit. David has also had many playing opportunities and had the honor of playing next to the world renown jazz saxophonist, James Carter. After college, David plans on auditioning for The Blue Man group and performing in either New York or Chicago as a professional jazz musician. Currently, he is part of the top ensembles at WSU and plays in The Barefoot Girls and The Creative Music Orchestra.
Students will be able to learn various styles of music like rock, jazz, blues, afrocuban, brazilian, and funk. I have many techniques and books that I've collected throughout the years. I also have collective techniques passed on from Wayne State instructors like Sean Dobbins and Dave Taylor. Most importantly, students will learn how to read music along with transcribe drum solos/style of any genre. I believe that if you want to learn a musical style, you have to listen to the masters of that idiom and learn what vocabulary is appropriate for that style of playing.
