Derrick has always loved music from an early age. He began playing Trumpet at the age of 10 and continued his education by studying music education in college. His musical influences include all of my colleagues as well as Maynard Ferguson. Derrick's favorite thing about music is that it is a universal language that can bring so many people together and create something beautiful. His favorite thing about teaching music is creating that bond with a student while they are growing not only musically, but also as a person. One of his favorite teaching experiences was when he was at MCBA Finals for marching band. He was warming up his brass and they played their favorite tune to get them excited to perform, and it was such an amazing experience. When taking lessons with Derrick you can expect high expectations but to have a great time in a low stress environment. Beginner - Intermediate
I teach with the mindset that we will get a lot of work done, without them even noticing. We are just having fun while I give them certain tips. I always make sure to never let anything slip so they always know what something means or why we do something a certain way.
What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons
Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced
They can expect a user-friendly way to learn how to write. Nothing will be judged, but maybe have suggestions. I look at it as a way of having an extremely creative outlet. We would go over how to use software, knowledge of certain Music Theory basics and have them write something small. Eventually, having them either add to it, or simply start a new composition to work on.
Formal Education:
I studied Music Education at Western Michigan University.
Performing Experience:
I have performed in every avenue a Trumpet player can get including: Musicals, Concert Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Brass Band, Chamber Ensembles and Solo Work.
Experience Teaching:
I have taught a variety of ages of students and have a lot of experience with different types of students as well. I have taught Band, Choir, Jazz Band and General Music.
