Khalil C.

Hi, my name is Khalil and I am a Drummer from Philadelphia. I have been a student of music for 22 years. My musical influences include Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Buddy Rich, Vinnie Colaiuta, JoJo Mayer, various members of the group Snarky Puppy and many more great musicians. I also enjoy singing, I'm not skilled but I can hold a tune. My teaching style can best be described as relaxed and very patient understanding that each person has an individually tailored learning curve. My teaching philosophy can best be described by saying that I like to build, cultivate and reward. In my lessons, you can expect to learn the fundamentals and basics that are dire to becoming a controlled and versatile drummer such as: Timing, Proper Stick Grip, Articulation, Stick Control, Rudiments, Dynamics, Theory and much more. I like to tell my students that "Playing clearly is better than playing fast". My favorite thing about teaching is being able to witness the sense of accomplishment when a student succeeds at a specific goal, especially one they seemed to be struggling with. My favorite performance would have to be playing at church for the first time, from the overall acceptance from the musicians to the encouragement from the congregation it all pushed me to become not only the musician, but the motivational instructor I am today. My students love that I can make drumming seem more simple and fun and I can take away the intimidation factor of drumming. I primarily teach drum set, but I can also teach snare or any type of marching style drumming. My approach as a teacher is to address the reality of "Muscle Memory" and understanding the importance of practice and how detrimental it is to practice outside of lesson times, keeping the muscles that need to be strong for proper playing fresh and limber.
