With beginner students I focus on two things: fundamentals and fun Throughout every lesson we’ll be constantly working on basic technique, learning chords in different voicings, various scales, introductory music theory, timing, and practicing drills and exercises. However, that won’t be entirety of the lesson; I like to send them home on day one being able to play something. I make sure to teach fun beginners songs that’ll give them an early taste of how it feels to make music with their own hands. As well as focusing on these two areas, I talk with my students about their favorite bands and musicians, then we work to select three songs for them to focus on learning: one beginner, one intermediate, and one advanced. I’ll help them learn any other songs they want to, but those three in particular will serve as long term goals for them to work towards. When students advance I like to serve as more of a musical companion, playing alongside them as they develop their musical sea legs, while still offering advice and direction.
