James has always loved music from an early age. He began playing piano by ear at the age of 9. Formal training would take place much later in life at Morgan State University. His musical influences include a wide array of artists in genres from gospel, to neo-soul. His favorite artist is soul singer and pianist Donnie Hathaway.

James's favorite thing about music is the ability to share experiences and emotions and his favorite thing about teaching music is empowering another to creatively share their story. One of his favorite teaching experiences was instructing students about rhythm at Commodore John Rodgers school. At the end of the school year, the students composed a rhythmic piece and perform it.
