Phil has taught his 3 boys and many friends how to play guitar, sing and write songs. He has also coached youth basketball for 12 years and lead 30 day wilderness expeditions for youth. Phil began playing guitar at the age of 16. He has been performing, writing and recording for 40 years. He gained performance experience by touring all over the United States in venues such as Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood, CBGB's in New York, the Metro in Chicago and the Fine Line in Minneapolis. You can hear one of Phil's recordings by going to and searching Hank and Ruth. In as little as 2 months, if you practice 1/2 hour per day, Phil can teach you to play and sing the songs you love in the style of Rock, Blues, Country, Folk and Funk. We will focus on the songs the student wants to learn. We will focus on strong solid rhythm. We will focus on the art of listening and playing together. I will encourage the student to experiment with singing and songwriting.
What to expect in my Vocal Lessons
Beginner - Intermediate
We will focus on singing in key, harmony, expression, power, delivery and losing inhibition.
What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons
Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced
We will focus on what the student feels, thinks and finds interesting in the world. We will study hit songs and poetry from the masters. We will work with using concrete words with plenty of descriptives, metaphor and similes. We will do writing exercises to free the creative process. We will work on creating solid grooves with interesting chord changes. We work on creating verses, bridges and choruses. We will work on inserting the melody of the voice into the chord structures.
