6 Years
Hello! My name is Max and music is in my veins. I believe I am on this Earth to share the gift of music, through teaching and guiding students, songwriting, and performance. I have recently moved to Charlottesville to lay down some roots, and I’m excited to become more a part of the community here. I'm naturally an adventurous, curious, and outgoing person, still holding on to a bit of my child-like wonder for the world. Music definitely helps me in this. I’m originally from Northern Virginia, but I’ve done a fair bit of traveling over the past few years. This has helped to keep me inspired and learn to connect with various kinds of people all across the globe. After graduating from William and Mary, I led a community service trip for U.S. students in Costa Rica, then proceeded to live and teach English in South Korea for two years. Now I’m back stateside, excited for the next phase of the journey. Working with children and music have been common themes throughout my life, so I’m happy to keep that same energy flowing. I can’t wait to meet you and see what kind of progress we can make together!
Maximilian M. has over 6 years of music experience in the Charlottesville area.

What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons
Song-writing is very near to my heart, as I feel it is the purest way in which I can express myself. However, it is not blind intuition-my songwriting process is very methodical. I can show students the key patterns that can produce a wide variety of songs. Most songs are made of relatively simple structures and chord progressions, and I love to demonstrate how to build and tweak these components to make memorable songs. It's a beautiful process of the left brain and right brain combined. I'm excited to share this gift with students to help them unlock their true songwriting potential!
What to expect in my Guitar Lessons
Above all, I believe learning music should be fun. I've known many friends and acquaintances who walked away from music lessons when they were younger, simply because it stopped being fun. As such, I strive to instill my lessons with an upbeat, energetic attitude to convey my love for music. It's such a beautiful tool for self-expression, so I want my students to experience that right from the get-go. While building on a trusted foundation of theory and technique, I also like to mix up my lessons some improvisation and composition exercises from the beginning. I do this so my students can see that you don't need to be a virtuoso to have fun playing music. I'm also open to devoting time to learning pop songs that my students enjoy, on top of the classics. On guitar, I am self taught starting from my teenage years, so I had a more mature appreciation of the subject from the beginning. As such, I know what pitfalls to avoid and a few shortcuts to help kick off progress in the beginning. Guitar has a bit more of a learning curve in the beginning than piano, but you can also start to play full-sounding songs with fewer building blocks. If I can help create a spark of enjoyment for my students, and they are able to connect the music with self-expression, then they are on their way to life-long musical journey!
What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons
Above all, I believe learning music should be fun. I've known many friends and acquaintances who walked away from music lessons when they were younger, simply because it stopped being fun. As such, I strive to instill my lessons with an upbeat, energetic attitude to convey my love for music. I do this so my students can see that you don't need to be a virtuoso to have fun playing music. I'm also open to devoting time to learning pop songs that my students enjoy, on top of the classics. Piano is a wonderful choice as a first instrument, and it was my first instrument too. It's organized visual layout helps students quickly gain an understanding of the theory behind music. In my piano lessons, we can work from the ground up, from building finger strength and dexterity, all the way to making original compositions. If I can help create a spark of enjoyment for my students, and they are able to connect the music with self-expression, then they are on their way to life-long musical journey!
Formal Education:
College of William and Mary, 3.9 GPA, Graduated 2016 Osbourn Park High School, 4.5 GPA, Graduated 2012
Private Education:
Private piano lessons age 7-16
Performing Experience:
As I've grown older, I have embraced the performing side of my persona more and more. As a youth, I got my start as a keyboardist, vocalist, and guitarist in my church youth group band. In college, I continued leading music in a Christian Ministry, and began to perform more original songs and pop covers in bar gigs around town. Upon moving to Korea after college, I expanded my performing scope. It became my main creative outlet, and I performed just about every week in expat circles. South Korea also has a huge street performing culture, which I was happy to explore. I also loved performing for my Korean students whenever there was an applicable lesson. In the current chapter of my life back in the U.S., performing is a key part of my livelihood. I spent the summer in Ocean City, Maryland, performing in restaurants and on the boardwalk. My stamina has now grown to allow for 4-5 hour performances, with a repertoire of over 150 songs. Now that I'm laying roots in Charlottesville, you may occasionally see me playing in the downtown mall as well!
Experience Teaching:
I began teaching private piano and guitar lessons when I was still in high school, and continued this practice throughout my college years. My lessons were flexible and fun, and I was able to adapt my teaching style to each students’ needs. It was incredibly rewarding to watch others grow as I was still growing myself. After college, I held a full-time teaching position in South Korea, teaching English as a Second Language to Korean students age 5-16. It was a wonderful adventure and allowed me to invest serious time into my teaching abilities, connect with students across cultures, and work on my classroom banter. Korea is famous for its fast-paced and highly organized educational culture, so I adapted to work well within this system. It was an excellent crash course in lesson plans, student evaluation reports, and classroom management.
