Funky, soulful, melodic, tasteful; these are just a few words that have been used to describe bassist Joey. With a solid foundation as an accomplished drummer, Joey blossomed as a phenomenal bassist at an early age. He comes from a musical family and can remember his grandmother, his first music teacher, and his mother (church organist) praying that God bless him with an extraordinary gift to express himself musically. Influenced by Marcus Miller, Andrew Gouche, Joel Smith, Victor Wooten, Wayman Tisdale, Jaco Pastorius, and Terrence Palmer, Joeyhas developed into an accomplished first call musician. Joeyhas recorded with Grammy and Stellar award winning artist John P. Kee. He is a credited bass player on Pastor Kee’s album, “Nothing But Worship.” Additionally, Joey has been a bassist for the following artists: Karen Clark Sheard, Kim Burrell, Stephen Herd,, KiKi Sheard, Rance Allen, Bishop Paul Morton, LaShun Pace Rhodes, Beverly Crawford, Helen Baylor, William Murphy Jr., The Singletons produced by Donald Lawrence, and many others. After cutting his proverbial “teeth” as a professional bassist in the gospel music industry, Joeywas afforded opportunities to perform in the mainstream music arena. He has recorded and toured extensively with Dwele. Three years of touring with Dwele gained him exposure international exposure in Korea, Japan, Paris, London, and throughout the rest of Europe. He completed a South African tour with R&B legend Johnny Gill. Shortly thereafter, he received a call to tour with R&B icon Tank. They toured Middle Eastern nations including Afghanistan. Based in Cleveland, OH, Joeyis currently the principal bassist for Gladys Knight, dubbed the Empress of Soul. He functions as both a touring and session bassist for Gladys Knight. He has traveled throughout the United States, and Canada with Gladys Knight. Ms Knight packs out arenas and plays upscale private events. There is extensive television and video footage of the band and Joeyis a major contributor to the sound and production. When Joey is not touring or recording with Gladys Knight, he can be found performing dates with Dwele, Johnny Gill, and Erica Campbell of award winning gospel duo Mary Mary. Joseph’s attributes his success as a musician to his devotion to his faith, family, and the pursuit of excellence.
