About Me

When I was nine, my family got me an electric guitar for Christmas and my musical journey began. I took guitar lessons for a couple of years before discovering orchestra in middle school. I started on viola and also became skilled on violin and cello as I became my section leader and started leading some practices as needed. This is when I started teaching myself piano so that I could better lead practices by playing two or more parts at once. After a couple of years in the orchestra, changing schools meant switching to band if I wanted to keep playing music so I picked up oboe for concert band as well as alto saxophone for marching band. In 2015, I moved to Goochland where I played piano and electric bass in the jazz band in addition to violin and viola as needed for musical theater. Most recently, I played viola as my main instrument for the Randolph College orchestra. For my audition, I played two pieces from memory which were impressive enough to land me not just a scholarship, but 100% of the funds allocated towards music scholarships. My contributions were even appreciated enough to earn me the scholarship funds during the semester that I could not take the course. Even though I stopped playing for Randolph in March 2020, I have never stopped playing for fun. Now I'm looking to pass the fun down to you with private lessons, whether you want to learn to play your favorite songs, how to play by ear, how to compose original music, or to arrange music for groups, I can help you get there.

What to expect in my Orchestral Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate

Shortly after first picking up my viola in sixth grade, I have always been a section leader of all the ensembles that I have played in. I assume orchestral lessons would be me teaching those with relatively developed skills on an instrument how to play in an orchestra, lead a section, conduct, read other clefs, and how to guide players on different instruments to achieve desired effects. I suggest piano to learn most of the other clefs and how to play multiple parts in unison. Depending on the starting instrument, I would also suggest a few lessons on similar instruments to know how to direct different instruments to play their parts as notated or maybe not, sometimes notation is wack. I would also eventually like to begin sharing my skills in musical arrangement and composition because full music scores are really expensive. If you can play by ear, a recording and some time are all you need to save as much as a couple hundred dollars a piece. Additionally, many arrangements rely on the makeup of the ensemble to execute the piece so many songs will need to be adjusted for the musicians in the group.

Formal Education:

I’ve taken formal musical classes from middle school all the way through university. I began in 6th grade with viola in chamber orchestra. Then added oboe and alto saxophone to my repertoire in 8th grade for concert and marching band. I moved to Virginia in tenth grade where I played electric bass and piano for jazz band and pep band through to graduation. Once I moved on to university at Randolph college I was able to join an orchestra again and I took first chair viola until 2020.

Private Education:

I began taking guitar lessons in 2009, starting with electric guitar and shortly after branching out with styles on acoustic and 7 string electric guitar. Private piano lessons became a part of my development in 2013, from which I started to train my ear to figure out songs on my own and improvise with music groups like my high school jazz band and university concert orchestra.

Performing Experience:

I have been performing since age 11 in church youth groups, since age 12 in school concert orchestras, since age 14 in school concert bands, since age 15 in school jazz band, and since age 19 in university concert orchestra. Along the way I have also participated in many talent shows and side gigs, both solo and alongside other musicians including rock band We Came as Romans in 2014.

Experience Teaching:

After years of leading practice groups for orchestras and casually teaching basics to friends, I finally began teaching professionally in November of 2021 with guitar and I have maintained strong relations with all my students through Taylor Robinson Music as well as students from word of mouth. I am sincerely grateful for everyone who has helped to make this vision of mine a reality and it is an unbelievable joy of mine to help others in nurturing their musical gifts as well.
