About Me

Samuel began playing piano at the age of 4 and started studying voice and drums by age 10. Over the years, he developed his skills further by receiving a Bachelor of Music in Composition with an emphasis in jazz drumming. He gained performance experience in the Kansas City area by playing at such venues as, the Grenada Theater, Liberty Hall, The Kaufman Center for Performing Arts, and Carnegie Hall, and with acts such as The Word Alive, Sunu, Jonathon Scales Fourchestra, Bolokada Conde, Weedie Braimah, and Brazilian percussion groups Olodum and Ilê Aiyê. Though Samuel can teach many different genres of music, his musical personal favorites are jazz, funk, and rock, which had a great influence on his style of playing. Music is important to Samuel because when he is playing music he is living in the moment. Samuel believes, "Playing your instrument requires you to be mindful and in turn helps you get out of your own head, which is a valuable skill that translates into other areas of life. I love teaching because it gives me the opportunity to share my passion for music while helping others discover theirs." What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons

- Intermediate

Students should expect to have learning piano be a fun experience. Learning notes and scales is very important so I try to always fuse whatever technique you are working on into the context of a piece of music so we learn our scales and fingerings through fun, enjoyable music.

What to expect in my Drum Lessons

- - Advanced

Students should expect to be opened to the wide world of drumming. I will cater lessons to the interests of the specific student, while also giving further music recommendations based on what they like already. Whether you want to drum so you can just jam for fun, or you want to learn how to read and count rhythms, I am your guy!

Formal Education:

Received a Bachelors of Music in Music Composition with a jazz drum emphasis from the University of Kansas in 2019.

Private Education:

I took private piano lessons starting at 4 and drum lessons from age 6 on. I have a lot of choral education from performing in touring choirs like the Lawrence Children's Choir. I lived and studied in Brazil for a month learning about their culture and music traditions.

Performing Experience:

I have performed all across the world with various groups. I performed in Carnegie Hall with my touring choir, I have performed with Brazilian percussion groups Olodum and Ilê Aiyê. I performed with the KU West African Drumming Ensemble at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in 2017. I have also played in various clubs, bars, and venues across the Kansas City metro in groups ranging from cocktail jazz to heavy metal.
