Hi, my name is Jonathan. I took to playing the drum set at the age of 4 and have been playing ever since. I started freelancing/gigging around the Columbia, SC music scene at the age of 13. Two of the more notable bands I have played with are Rope swingMarathon and Tokyo Joe. Music has always been my calling, so it brings me joy to be able to see that in others and try to kindle their passion in the same way my own instructors have done for me.

Beginner - Advanced - Intermediate
Curriculum may vary depending on an individual’s experience/interests. Although technical proficiency and musicality are the ultimate goal, my focus is not just to help students figure out how to develop chops or learn songs, but to first hone into HOW they learn and why. This is an essential first-step towards learning an instrument that I believe frequently goes overlooked. Once this connection is made, the focus shifts to a combination of technique (I.e. rudiments, snare drum rep, etc), drum set coordination, and the student’s own musical interests (favorite songs, bands, etc). I truly believe that each individual is capable of achieving their musical goals by means of efficient/consistent practice and-most importantly-a desire/passion to play music. It is my objective with every student to help guide them along this path and encourage them to use the same skills they learn in the classroom to help improve all other aspects of life.
Formal Education:
Undergrad in Jazz Performance, UNC Charlotte
Performing Experience:
Over a decade of freelancing/performing for local artists in the Columbia music scene, most notably with locally renowned top 40s band Tokyo Joe (2 years).
Experience Teaching:
Taught drum lessons at Freeway Music from 2 before departing to pursue a degree in Jazz performance at UNC Charlotte.
