Growing up, I had many different types of influences. I was born into a diverse family of artists, musicians, and medical professionals. I am a classically trained pianist and self-taught guitarist/percussionist, playing music since 1990. It has been a joy to work with so many diverse musicians over the years. It has taught me a lot about how to adapt to different learning styles and how to make lessons into a fun learning time for each student. Aside from piano performances, I played guitar and keyboard in high school bands, and did percussion for the worship team at church. I have always had an eclectic taste in music, so my musical knowledge spans many genres, including classical, contemporary, ragtime, rock, 80s/new wave, hip-hop, flamenco, R&B, metal, electronic, and more. Since becoming a conservative Christian, my current repertoire is strictly classical and Christian music, focusing on classic hymns, gospel songs, and composition of Scripture songs. My psychology background gives me a unique understanding of what teaching methods benefit students most. Playing music also improves many of our mental faculties (math, language, memory, etc.), particularly in children. With children, my dual mission is to create a positive learning experience with music and to support development using music as a tool to instill positive attitudes about self and learning because this lays a strong foundation. I have had students from ages 3-55, I have done group lessons, and I have trained kids and teens for NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) competitions with much success. I love to guide students in discovering their unique ‘voice’. The key is to have fun and capture the joy of playing music, for maestros and novices alike. I have a basic curriculum for each instrument, but I also adapt to each student in my teaching methods. And, while lessons are an educational experience, ensuring my students are enthusiastic about learning and look forward to lessons each week is key in my book. Many traditional methods used by instructors can seem tedious or boring, to both children and adults, so I've learned how to avoid this pitfall while still providing formal training. I make the most of our time together and I am devoted to your advancement in whatever area of musicianship you wish to explore-your success is my success!

What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons
I like to build rapport with students and parents and find out what makes each student super excited to learn so that lessons are always fun and always productive. I am adaptable to different learning goals and learning styles, so curriculum depends more on individual student needs, but I am equipped to guide students through classical training, modern, or a combination of both.
Formal Education:
I earned my BA in Psychology with a minor in Music, completing courses in Music History, Music Theory, Music Performance, and Music Exploration, several of which I assisted the professor. I had a therapy practice for 4 years, but music became my focus and teaching is something I wish to do for the rest of my life. In the past, I have worked with children with special needs as a swim instructor and I worked for many years as a PCA (Personal Care Attendant), so I feel perfectly comfortable taking on students with special needs.

I am happy to recommend Michelle as an instructor. I have had the pleasure of knowing Michelle for two years. She has worked with my son first as his guitar teacher and more recently as his piano teacher. Michelle's talents lie not only in teaching but also in understanding her students. She quickly assessed my son's skills and intelligence and crafted her teaching accordingly. More importantly, she made my son feel capable and accomplished, which was what he needed to continue practicing and to find his love for music. Michelle is intelligent and gifted musically, no doubt, but she is also a gifted teacher who connects honestly and whole-heartedly with her students. She went well above what was expected from a music teacher and became an integral part of my son's life over these past two years. Michelle Can. wrote on Tue, 01 Dec 2020
