About Me
Hi, my name is Onyie and I am a Voice Teacher, Performer and Songwriter originally from Texas, but lived in NYC for the past 16 years. I went to college for vocal performance opera but after my freshman year I transferred schools to pursue a BFA in musical theatre. My musical influences are numerous and span too many genres to name from musicals to opera, alternative rock to jazz, classical to KPOP. My teaching style can best be described as specific, technical and encouraging! I'm a goofball with a ton of knowledge and passion for healthy vocal production. My teaching philosophy can best be described by saying that I take seriously pouring into my students. I go above and beyond to cultivate a positive ART-mosphere--an atmosphere that removes the fear of judgement/condemnation that can stifle even great artists. In my lessons, you can expect to learn technical skills as well as artistry while having fun! I like to tell my students we learn skills in lessons so we don't have to think about them in performance. My favorite thing about teaching is discovery, for both my students and myself. There's nothing like when a student hears/feels a new skill produce something amazing in their voice in realtime! My favorite performances have been playing Joanne in the national tour of "Rent" as well as the Off Broadway World premiere of "Oratorio for Living Things" where I won a Lucille Lortel award. My students love that I LOVE what I do and care so much about their health both vocally and mentally. I primarily teach healthy vocal production, but I can also teach songwriting. I used to work for a music production school where I taught songwriting with a focus on structure and the creative process. I am also a freelance topline-writer where I write songs for producers/artists (10+ years) as well as writing my own original music. My approach as a teacher is to be patient, honest and encouraging. Thanks for taking a look at my profile. Hope to meet you soon!

What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

I teach with a focus on song structures as well as the creative process. I like to introduce new ideas for inspiration and I encourage a deepening knowledge of varying genres and styles. I've learned as a songwriter myself that the more music that is in me, the more creative my output. We also build understanding of things like rhythm/meter, scansion, lyrical structure, themes and more! And FUN is a priority! Getting to make art is a gift and should be enjoyable, even when working out hard techniques or difficult subjects.

What to expect in my Vocal Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

I always say just come expecting to learn with a readiness to have fun! I'm a serious teacher but also a goofball! We're probably going to laugh a lot but you're also going to learn a LOT! I think getting to sing should be something that excites you and is the BEST part of your day!!
