I always start off with basic chord structures for scales, technique, and basic understandings of music theory. So learning what notes are what and what things to practice that sound good to the ears, usually to gauge how far a student wants to go with piano. If goals are made clear in the beginning, a lot of these can move to a lil bit more advanced pace, but only upon what kind of progress a student is making. Once those are sorted out, I would move onto sight reading sheet music and teaching how to read AND understand what is being played. When it comes to improvisation, one can only play without thought once they understand the instrument they are playing. For intermediate players, I would hope for some clearer goals as to help you get to the place you would LIKE to be as a musician or to help along in the best ways I can. I love practicing duets with newer players as it promotes better cooperation with other instrument players.
