As far back as I can remember, music has been an enormous part of my life. I come from a family of musicians and music lovers, so something was always going on musically at my home. Honestly, my biggest musical influences are my own family: people I know and love and can respect. My one-man-band grandfather, my beautiful grandmother, my parents who love to sing, my uncles, aunts, great uncles, cousins and highly talented siblings have all influenced my love and understanding of music. This love that was fostered in me is what drives me to continue in it. Talent is only a small part of the success equation. I have seen talented people who played technically very well, but lacked in passion and it just wasn't as fun to listen to them as to someone who LOVED it. I believe that people who have a desire to learn can learn anything they set their mind to. I love taking someone who is motivated, helping them learn the knowledge they need, showing them to play or sing from the inside out and watching them shine with passion in their music. Sometimes all that a person needs is encouragement that they can do it and some know-how. My job is not to make a copy of myself, but find out what motivates a person and help them reach their goals. Along the way I ensure that the fundamentals are understood and there is a stylistic balance because I believe there are valuable things to learn from every style. As my own measuring guide I often ask myself, "if my student had to explain to someone what they've learned, what could they show them?"
Stephanie M. Ho has over 16 years of music experience in the Tulsa area.
Stephanie M. Ho is proficient in and teaches Keyboard and Piano Lessons, Vocal Lessons .Formal Education:
I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Music Technology from ORU in 2005. My study included classical piano, voice, recording technology (at Recording Workshop in Chilicothe, OH), and worship leadership. My summer internship was in live sound at a 5,000+ member church in Menlo Park California.
Private Education:
I started piano lessons at the age of 5 and took them up through my college years, starting with college professors in the 5th grade. I also took Suzuki cello lessons for about 5 years. I took several years of formal voice lessons starting in high school and going through college.
Performing Experience:
I have sung in multiple choirs for many years, including a choir that went to Italy to sing in the cathedrals, classical choirs, chamber choirs, All-State choir (high school), women's choir, church choirs and gospel choirs. Other groups I performed with include two handbell choirs, a youth orchestra, multiple small vocal ensembles ranging from classical a cappella to jazz and contemporary and gospel styles. I have led praise and worship for 7 years singing a mixture of black gospel, contemporary, and some traditional music. During this time I sang on three albums of original gospel music- including two of my own songs, assisted in several church music conferences which included the performance of some of my music, and also traveled regionally to many churches singing and sometimes leading praise and worship.
Experience Teaching:
While I was in college, I taught parts by rote to the praise team at a small African American church and led the band that included myself on keys. In 2004, I began leading the praise and worship team at a new church. I have been there ever since, teaching parts to numerous singers on countless numbers of songs, as well as playing keys and organ and different times. I worked with singers who had no experience and often taught them how to harmonize and become stronger vocally. I believe that quality musicians make for a quality team and often in church work, many start out untrained and need a lot of encouragement and technical training. One of the singers I taught did a year long internship with me, and took piano and voice lessons with me longer than that and is now one of our praise and worship leaders. During this time I also started our church choir, taking inexperienced people with a love of music and having them sing things they never thought they could. I also run and teach at the Tulsa Homeschool Choir which encompasses several choirs in pre-k-12th grades. Privately, I currently have several students including both piano and voice. Most of my students I have had for two years or more. I also taught at a local studio, Brook Fine Arts, for about two years where I taught piano, voice and beginning strings. During my peak amount of students there I averaged about 50 students per week, the majority being children, but also some teens and adults. I enjoyed it a lot but had to leave due to the birth of my daughter.
