Dennis J. Wi.

Born and raised in NJ, my experience in music started at age seven. After five years of classical piano lessons, I developed an interest in popular music, and, I took additional piano lessons from a progressive jazz piano teacher. This instruction inspired me to study chord progressions and chord structures used in popular music. In addition, I began studying the clarinet and alto sax at age eleven.

In high school, I was a member of the reknowned Clifton(NJ) High School Mustang Band. Their history may be searched, online. I went on to major in music at Wake Forest University, and, during my senior year, I became the sole student arranger for the university's marching, stage, and pep bands. I also conducted these ensembles at various ACC athletic events. Throughout, I honed my piano skills, and, on several occasions, I was featured during piano lab classes. Much of my arranging resulted from my music theory knowledge and my piano skills. After earning my BA in music at Wake, I spent a fifth year at Montclair State University, NJ, studying music education and completing my student teaching leading to my teacher certification in NJ. I have subsequently taught high school music students in four states....NJ, CA, FL, and, NC. I also taught piano, privately.

As a performer, I've done solo acts in a variety of capacities, including impromptu performances when called upon. I have performed live for audiences ranging in size from twenty to over four thousand. Of course, as a high music director, I planned, coordinated, and, directed scores of student musical performances in both vocal and instrumental music. I have also accompanied students on piano many times.

My teaching in music and piano, in particular, has always been based upon a music theory approach to popular music. My skilla on piano reflect my classical training, and, many who have heard me perform note that I may classified as a pianist who plays popular music with a classical influence.

I look to share my musical experiences with piano music students who are eager to develop their own musical skills / interests. Although I have taken my personal talents and skills to the level which I have, I allow my students to determine their own aspirations.
