About Me

Hi, my name is Kevin. I am 24 years old, attend the University of Central Florida, play drums for the band Call To Start, and have been playing drums for 12 years now. I listen to a pretty wide variety of music, but mostly rock. My style of drumming has a mix between metal, alternative and pop. A few drummers I look up to and have gained influence from are the late James "The Rev" Sullivan from Avenged Sevenfold, Carter Beauford from The Dave Matthers Band, Longineu "LP" Parsons III from Yellowcard and Joey Jordison from Slipknot. The way I like to teach is through having fun. I believe that if taking lessons is something you don't look forward to then you are wasting time and money. With that being said I usually like for students to have the basic concept of music theory down; quarter notes, sixteenth notes, time signatures, etc. I believe this is very helpful in improving your drumming skills, especially when you begin to learn fill patterns on the toms and cymbals. From there I will basically allow the student to tell me what they would like to learn (covering a certain song, incorporating double bass, etc.) and help them accomplish it, while giving them more tips on how to grow as a drummer.

Kevin Do. has over 8 years of music experience in the Merritt Island area.

Formal Education:

I did concert band when I entered middle school, I was fascinated with drums and percussion, and decided to try out for the percussion section in 7th grade, which I made. I learned how to read sheet music for snare, bass, marimba and timpani. I played tenors in 8th grade for my middle schools marching/pep band. After middle school I missed the auditions for the high school drum line, but was still enrolled in the class. The student who played 5th bass on the line was not enrolled in the class, so the teacher asked me to play along with the line during class time. I learned to read more intricate sheet music, and older students in the class constantly worked with me on rudiments and stick handling. It was around this time that I wanted to play the drum set. I made tenors sophomore year, and was even named section leader. I continued to excel on the drum line, and was also focusing more on playing the set. I left the drum line junior year to improve my skills on the set, and played in the jazz band for a year. Although I was not on the line I was still very involved with them. I arranged a couple songs for the marching band to play in the stands, and taught the new tenor players all of our cadences. Senior year I completely stopped with the school band to focus on creating my own band. Since graduating I have completed college music theory classes in pursuit of a music minor.

Private Education:

I have never received private education. The closest thing to lessons I had were the ones that came from my friends and instructors.

Performing Experience:

I have had plenty of marching and concert band performances throughout high school. My first show I played drums with my own band was in the Fall of 2010. Since then I have constantly played shows with Call To Start at notable venues like Backbooth in downtown Orlando, The Orpheum in Ybor city, The State Theater in St. Pete, and many small bars around Florida. I also have experience recording in a professional recording studio, as we have recorded demos/singles and are now working on an EP.

Experience Teaching:

I have no "professional" experience teaching drums. The teaching I have done and continue to do comes in the form of helping my friends who have recently picked up drums. When I was section leader in high school I would constantly help other tenor players with their parts. My teachers have always noticed I excel in music, and that I am good with helping others in it.
