About Me
Elise-a flutist who hails from Philadelphia, has appeared as featured soloist, band-leader and band& member with such notables as David Murray, Archie Shepp, Butch Morris and Arthur Blythe, Sir Roland Hanna, Spirit of Life Ensemble and most her partner of two decades, pianist John Hicks. She has recorded for Mapleshade Records, Landmark Records, Evidence Records Hi Records Savant Records. International festivals and tours include Japan, Finland, Italy, France and Taiwan. Documentary films such as Femme du Jazz and books, Madame Jazz as well as magazine articles in WindPlayer and Fa La Lut and Jazz Hot place Msin the cutting edge of this creative American art form, Jazz.

What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate

My primary instrument is the flute-I teach at all levels and my forte although playing classical music is my background is Jazz improvisation. I have experience in songwriting, Western harmonic progression, beginning piano, and voice coaching using the Taylor Robinson curriculum.

Experience Teaching:

Elise-Teaching Chronology 2000 – present Private flute Instruction- 1 year of private lessons for a church organist in beginning techniques of flute study. interpretation through listening, exercising various articulations and ornamentations as well as focusing on ensemble playing and expressiveness. Composers works studied include Bach, Debussy, Mozart and Frocsay 2007-present Coaching for a Masters candidate matriculating student seeking a degree in Jazz Flute studies at NYU. Lessons included studies of basic classic etudes for flute, various articulation studies and exercises in improvisation and composition including repertoire by composers such as Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Joe Henderson as well as polishing recording techniques. The student earned her Masters degree at the completion of the these two years. 2 Working with Saxophone/doublers on producing an excellent sound on the flute and interpreting in a different manner acknowledging the differences of the single reed instrument and the flute. Included on roster of New School,NYC Adjunct Faculty. 2 Jazz Foundation of America Bandleader for jazz combo (keyboard, guitar, bass and drums) twice a month offering lecture-demonstrations to teach the elements of Jazz composition and basic jazz theory. Sites of employment included Brookdale Hospital, Brookdale, NY (children’s psychiatric ward) and Grace Congregational Church in Harlem (Summer Love program). Age groups were mixed from 3 – 13 (with adults present) and each lesson was prepared to compliment the repertoire for the day. Tools for teaching included percussion instruments and an instructional felt “board” for teaching music theory. Sessions culminated in an annual Jazzmobile performance sponsored by the 139th St. Block Association. 2007 Selected as a New York University Jazz Fellow for clinics offered at NYU Jazz Appreciation to NYU music students by way of lecture demonstration and performances with resident rhythm section. Compositions included various jazz classics from the books of Ellington, Monk and standards such as Cherokee. 1 An ensemble member of Safari East Cultural Presentations working throughout the 5 boroughs of New York in various community centers offering lecture/ demonstrations and performances. Program concept was to travel by way of music and was shaped with the African Diaspora in which travels to Africa, the Caribbean and then to America culminated in the History of Jazz.
