Drumming on pots and pans at age 3 and moving to his first set of drums by age 5, Lance was well on his way to becoming a professional drummer. His dad was a trumpet player who encouraged him to play music at a young age and provided him countless opportunities to experience music and learn from other musicians. As a child, Lance’s parents worked in the music business at GRP Records and Clinton Recording Studios in NYC where Lance was introduced to many great session musicians. One of his earliest memories is meeting Steve Gadd and playing his drums at age 4! Lance played drums and percussion throughout elementary, middle and high school, including symphonic and hand percussion (including mallets) in concert/symphonic band and drum set and hand percussion in jazz band. In high school marching band and winter percussion ensembles, he started with drum set and mallets in the pit section and moved on to marching bass drum and snare drum. Lance began gigging in Denver very early in his career, playing drums with the punk band Mass Confusion in middle school, where he gained a completely different approach to music, and at several residency jazz gigs in the Denver area with other young musicians in high school. In 2001 Lance played drum set in the six time world champion Blue Knights Winter Percussion Ensemble. From 2 Lance was a student and board member of the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts where he was able to study and play with local and national greats such as Paul Romaine, Eric Gunnison, Greg Gisbert, Ken Walker, Jeff Jenkins, Pat Bianchi, Paul Musso, Hugh Reagan, Joe Andries and more. After high school Lance took the chance to travel to different parts of the world and play music with local musicians in London, Amsterdam, Rome, Prague and Tanzania. Lance graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Performance from The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City in 2008, studying with drummers the likes of Ari Hoenig, Jim Black, Keith Carlock, Andrew Cyrille, Charlie Persip, Carl Allen, Billy Martin, Tyshawn Sorey, Vanderlie Pereira, Amir Ziv, Bernard Purdie, Lenny White, and Mike Clark, as well as many other musicians. While focusing on jazz drum set at The New School, Lance also studied hand percussion, African drumming, Brazilian drumming, piano, film scoring, finale, recording engineering, and advanced levels of rhythm, music theory, ear training, sight reading and composition.
