Maxwell is a composer and guitarist, specializing in new music, jazz, and improvisation, based in the Washington DC metro area. He is a founding member of Beat on the Bard, a theatre company and arts organization in DC, the founder of Glass Flower, a new music ensemble focusing on performing challenging work by contemporary composers, and is a member of the Shenandoah New Music Collective, a group of composers and performers trying to engage with communities in the Shenandoah Valley to create engaging new work. Maxwell runs workshops on contemporary improvisation, the music of Ornette Coleman, and is the creator of a pedagogical method based around Marilyn Crispell's writings
