I have over 25 years of performance, education, and teaching experience. I teach students of all ages and abilities, in many different styles, such as modern (rock, pop), classical, and jazz. I specialize in percussion(drums), guitar, string bass, ukulele, and piano. Every lesson is individualized to match the abilities and interests of the student, keeping them challenged and progressing. In teaching, I focus on the student’s musical interests, such as songs the students want to play, while incorporating foundational basics and theory into the lessons. I also like to get to know students as individuals, what they like and don’t like, so they can enjoy a fun and easy learning experience. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree from the University of Dayton and am a member of MTNA (Music Teachers National Association), and NAfME (National Association of Music Educators).
Robert D has over 10 years of music experience in the Hoffman Estates area.
Robert D is proficient in and teaches Guitar Lessons, Bass Guitar Lessons, Drum Lessons, Keyboard and Piano Lessons, Song Writing Lessons .Degree and Field of Study:
What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons
From beginner to intermediate, I focus on what the students want to learn and craft the lessons around their passions, creating knowledge and technique. Since beginners are my focus with piano, I will introduce you to the basics: piano key names, proper stance and technique, the basics of sight reading and intervals, when to use right versus left hand, basic scales and songs. I'll get you playing and enjoying the piano in no time. Then we build on your previously attained knowledge and expand it to hone technique, expand your musical knowledge further, and make you sound like a proper piano player. There is always much to learn at all stages; and I love learning and expanding with my students.
What to expect in my Drum Lessons
There is a lot to learning the drums and the focus of our lessons is always on what the student plans to do. Is it marching band? Drummer in a music group? Just want to impress for one night? I cater the lesson plans to your goals. That being said, for the set drummer: Beginners learn the names of the drums, proper technique, and very quickly move on to learning basic beats, most by the end of the first lesson. We build from there into about a thousand other beats and fills. Intermediate drummers learn 4-way independence, polyrhythm, fills and about a thousand more beats. Advanced students learn all the above with expanded technical knowledge. At the advanced stage, we just want to refine you and allow you to sit at any drum set and play any kind of music on cue.
What to expect in my Bass Guitar Lessons
From beginner to advanced, I focus on what the students want to learn and craft the lessons around their passions, creating knowledge and technique. For beginners, I will introduce you to the basics of the bass, the string names, proper stance and technique, the notes on the fret board, basic scales and songs. I'll get you playing and enjoying the bass in no time. For intermediate players, we build on your previously attained knowledge and expand it to hone technique, focus on muting, expand your musical knowledge more, and make you sound like a proper bass player. In these lessons you'll learn style and how to impress. For advanced players, we build and refine, expanding stylistically and technically, learning advanced theory, tricks, phrasing, all with songs you want to play. There is always much to learn at all stages; and I love learning and expanding with my students.
What to expect in my Guitar Lessons
From beginner to advanced, I focus on what the students want to learn and craft the lessons around their passions, creating knowledge and technique. For beginners, I will introduce you to the basics of the guitar, the string names, proper stance and technique, the notes on the fret board, basic scales and songs. I'll get you playing and enjoying the guitar in no time. For intermediate players, we build on your previously attained knowledge with more theory, different scales, technique, styles, and apply this all to songs you want to learn. We'll tackle more detailed material and start to learn details that can make your playing shine. For advanced players, we refine your playing style with advanced theory, speed, phrasing, fretwork, expanding stylistically and technically, and finding challenges to master, all with songs you want to play. There is a ton to be learned at any stage and I love teaching and mastering all of it with my students.

Rob D
Rob is in a very accomplished musician and about as thorough of an individual as a person possibly could be. He takes great pride in whatever he does and his knowledge when it comes to music is second to none. Matthew Newman wrote on Mon, 01 Aug 2016
Robert D referrence
I've know Rob for 22 years and have found him to have a great ear for music. In truth, I don't thing there's much that gets past him and he has a knack for picking up odd chord voicing (7's, 9s, suspensions, etc). Rob is also very adept at teaching and showing the proper rhythmic approach to right hand picking technique. As a former band mate - Rob was very helpful in getting me to count (no small feat) and this is due to his diversified background as a drummer and bassist. Rob can break down a song for a student into very understandable segments and help someone establish good habits early on. The basics of music are in proper technique and rhythm and these are 2 of Rob's strongest attributes. Rob is a great guy, easy to get along with and a good communicator in that he uses examples to show the technique/theory behind the physical movements. I'd recommend Rob to anyone looking to start or continue their education on guitar. Given his degree in music and experience both on and off the stage, he would be a great resource for any guitar player. Bryan Buhoveckey wrote on Tue, 02 Aug 2016
Rob D review
Rob is a excellent drummer, vocalist and bass player as well as a guitarist. Nothing is too difficult for him to play or sing. His personality is relaxed, confident and is very easy to communicate with other musicians. I attest to the above because I've been his fellow musician (lead guitarist) for over 12 years. I taught guitar for nearly 20 years and Rob knows music theory very well and how to play a wide variety of music. Jeff Koopman wrote on Tue, 02 Aug 2016

Robert's drum lesson
I applied for drum lessons for my 12-year-old son. Robert has always been a great teacher. He was always kind and fully explained to me. My son liked his class very much and enjoyed it. We've been applying for his classes and this time we're going to do the guitar class together. Hyungtae kim wrote on Thu, 25 Jul 2019

"I just wanted to let you know how great Mr. Robert is. My son is 10 years old and he has been taking drum lessons with Mr. Robert for the last 2 semesters and absolutely loves it. He is patient, caring and detailed when it comes to teaching. We have a hectic schedule due to multiple activities and Mr. Robert is always understanding and flexible. My husband and I have zero knowledge about music and had a difficult time setting up the drum set at home. Mr. Robert volunteered to come home and helped us set up the drum set. We are very happy we found him" Robert Davenport wrote on Thu, 07 Jan 2021

Robert-Drums
"Mr. has been a great drum set instructor for our son. He provides personalized instruction based on our son's level and interests. He provides a recap after each lesson and always gives us the opportunity to ask any questions we might have. Our son started lessons with Mr. with absolutely no experience whatsoever. After a year, he is now working on limb independence exercises, practicing rudiments, and playing along with well known songs. It has been fun to see how much progress he has made!" -Michael P. Robert-Piano
"Robert is a wonderful, knowledgeable and very fun piano teacher. When my daughter started taking lessons with Robert she was very reluctant and skeptical. However, by the end of the first lesson she was very excited to come back again. Seeing this was the first introduction to the piano for my daughter Robert made learning the piano very fun. She continues to be driven to learn more about the piano and is always excited to go to her lessons." -Kalpa P. Robert Davenport wrote on Thu, 07 Jan 2021
