Review:

Dr. Yoon Jee

I am writing to you in support of Dr. Yoon Jee's application for teaching positions in music. I have known her for twelve years, and have taught her in both the classroom and private studio. Dr. Yoon Jee is a gifted musician with an inventive mind, a diligent work ethic, and a solid foundation in all aspects of the craft. I believe that she shows great promise as a composer and educator. Yoon Jee’s music is both creative and proficient. She understands the craft of composing, writes effective, if challenging, parts for all instruments, and embraces both traditional and adventurous techniques. Some of her works incorporate the music and folklore of her native Korea into an expressive, contemporary Western vocabulary. The results are quite striking, demonstrating an excellent sense of pacing, an ear for color, and a willingness to challenge both performers and audiences with unusual and rewarding material. With each new piece I saw growth and an exploration of new techniques. This adventurous attitude will continue to serve Yoon Jee well as a creative artist far into the future. As a student, Yoon Jee’s work was always excellent. She was a dedicated student, a hard worker, and was always prompt and accurate. In the classroom, she excelled in both Analytical Techniques and Advanced Counterpoint with me, and I understand that her work during her doctoral studies was also top notch. Yoon Jee was a teaching assistant in our theory program, and was always reliable in that role as well. Since leaving our program, she taught extensively at The University of Arizona and in adjunct capacities in the Phoenix area along with raising her young family. An excellent communicator with a clear passion for music, I have no doubt that her students benefit greatly from her musical insights. Everyone on the music composition faculty at The University of Florida found Yoon Jee a delight to work with, and she will be a delightful colleague in any setting. Sincerely, Paul Richards Professor of Composition The University of Florida Paul Richards wrote on Fri, 12 Aug 2016
