I began teaching when my younger brother was beginning his music education with piano. I was disappointed to find that his experience with private lessons mirrored mine as a kid, in that after months of lessons he was shockingly uneducated in theory. This being his second teacher, I was surprised to find that neither had taught him what I considered to be simple concepts of theory such as forming chords, understanding time signatures, and even using basic scales. Rather, his lessons tended to consist of recitations of simple songs with a new page from a book assigned each week. For this reason I offer lessons with a strong emphasis on music theory, as well as improvisation and composition. These lessons are based on my own designed ciriculum particular to each student's goals and pace. I would rather teach a concept of theory and instruct how to create music using that concept than simply assign a song to learn and practice. In my experience this results in students being excited to learn, and experiencing much more growth. I currently offer lessons in my home recording studio, and can travel to a student's location.
