University of Evansville-B.M. Vocal Performance

Raised in Albuquerque, NM in a family of professional musicians and educators, Miss Cathryn has been performing on stage since age 10, going on to study at the Interlochen Arts Academy and the Boston University Theatre Institute. As a mezzo-soprano, she studied Vocal Performance at the University of Evansville with Dr. Jon Truitt, as well as with R.. Johnny M. Poon and Roberta Veazey, where she received her Bachelor’s of Music in 2008. She has since gone on to perform in a variety of productions, as well as study with several young artist programs including the Crested Butte Music Festival in Colorado’s production of Don Giovanni as Zerlina, Peach State Opera’s workshop productions of Carmen, as Mercedes, and Hänsel und Gretel as Hänsel, and as the alto soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra. Past roles include Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), Elmire (Tartuffe), Lucy Lockitt (The Beggar’s Opera), and The Sorceress (Dido and Aeneas). You may have caught her performing with Onion Man Productions as well as Lionheart Theatre in a variety of productions, including Lionheart Theatre’s production of How To Succeed in Business without Really Trying as Miss Jones.

In addition to in-home private lessons, Miiss Cathryn has the privelage of teaching voice and piano lessons with Roswell Performing Arts and has had experience teaching at The Honey Bee School of Music. Her method as a vocal instructor incorporates the many aspects of singing with an emphasis on healthy vocal technique, body alignment, and breath support, as well as character development, diction and articulation. Reading music is important for ALL instrumentalists, and that includes vocalists! Students of both piano and voice are taught basic music theory, ear training, and the art of practicing on their own time outside of lessons. They will be introduced to a wide variety of age and skill-appropriate music, including classical art song and musical theatre and are encouraged to express themselves creatively through improvisation and even their own compositions. Every voice, whether from our mouths or through the keys of a piano, is special and unique and students, ages 6 and up, will be taught according to their level and need. Miss Cathryn fosters a positive environment of encouragement and acceptance; a judgement-free zone. Every lesson is a space for self-expression, inquisitiveness, and fun! Inside of all of us is the spirit of a musician with a voice that is just waiting to shine! Whether you’re Broadway-bound or making music for the sheer joy of it, it is important for us all to find our inner voice!
